Some of world’s largest superyachts on glamorous display as boat show kicks off

The 60th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show opened Wednesday with an array of airborne and submersible “toys” for the super-rich, as well as a village of superyachts that includes a newly minted 311-foot vessel from Germany.
Massive high-tech vessels — some triple and quadruple parked along the Intracoastal Waterway — dominated the newly installed village at the Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina’s new “Pier South” property, which is adjacent to the southeast corner of the 17th Street Causeway bridge.
“Always nice to have a superyacht in your background,” quipped Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis before stepping to a microphone to help open the event.
The show, which started with 15 boats in 1959, now spans a half-dozen locations, including the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center and Bahia Mar Resort and Yachting Center. Planners expect 110,000 visitors over its five-day run, which is scheduled to wrap up Sunday.
